MAY 2009 READING LIST

Do you read more than one book at a time? How do you select what you will read next?

My reading seems a bit frenetic lately. I am reading Atlas Shrugged (finally), The Vigorous Mind, I am listening to The Bachelors by Muriel Spark driving to and from the office, reading Vanity Fair by William Thackeray in snipets sent by DailyLit, a free online service. And then I went to the library and checked out Richard and John: Kings at War and Cold Comfort Farm, oh, and I used my 40% Border's coupon to pickup Molly Wizenberg's A Homemade Life. What is the matter with my brain?

I want to read everything at once! But it's not as if I am going to a deserted island for one month to do nothing but read. So I don't know how to get it all in--not to mention that Atlas Shrugged is over a thousand pages, and the Richard and John book is a serious history book so not exactly a quick read.

So, tell me--how do you select your reading and when do you get it in. Is there anything you neglect in your life to read? Leave a comment if you dare bare your soul on this subject!

  1. My reading totally depends on my mood at the time I am looking for a new book. If I don't have a good mystery waiting for me in my stack, I tend to revert to my old friends, the classics that I love to re-read. That is why I am in a book group to force me to read a variety of books!

  2. I'm like you, I read a variety of books at one time and I always have a pile on my nightstand and a list going on when I hear of a good book. I'm currently listening to "Einstein" in the car, and reading "Three Cups of Tea". On my kitchen table are the current Church magazines, the Chicago Tribune, US New and World Report, and readers digest in the bathroom (heehee).Lest I forget scriptures and my seminary manuals. I usually have a book in my purse and of course I glance on the internet at my local news and then AZ's. I too joined a book club to be exposed to other genres. Every week the CT has excellent articles on books so I'm always gleaning that page to see what is new. There is just far too many good books out there. Since moving here our family hardly watches TV anymore. I do netflix and record a couple of shows but reading is my new love. I love reading your posts and the book reviews. You're an excellent writer. There better be books in the next life cuz we're not going to get through them all here.

I laughed out loud at your comment about the books in the next life--there better be!

And now I'm going to have to start reading the Chicago Trib's book section...

Yes, Annini Beach on the North Shore in Kauai--loved it.

Good luck with finals! Or do you have finals in law school?

  7. I usually read one history book (likely bears some relation to future or past travels) and one novel at a time. Every once in a great while I will throw in something really serious and educational, like my slog through vol. I of "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" (very long; I'm afraid to begin vol. II) or the much shorter and very good "Ethica Thomistica." I've been reading so many light British mysteries recently, that I need something serious soon. I think it will be a bio of Pompey the Great. My husband buys books like I buy shoes, so when I need something new to read I just wander through the house looking for whatever strikes my mood...
